- As the name says, this document provides sketchy information needed
- to get you started with the game. We highly recommend that you read
- the ESTERIAN CONQUEST PLAYERS GUIDE in order to really learn how to
- use the forces available to you in the game.

- OBJECT OF THE GAME:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Become the ruler of the galaxy by having all the other players
- surrender & acknowledge you as Emperor. Hold enough planets through
- conquest or colonization to be recognized as emperor. Defeat the
- space fleets and conquer the planets of any players who oppose you.

- THE PLAY:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- You begin owning 1 planet (your homeworld). You start with four
- fleets: two consisting of a colonizing ship (ETAC) and a cruiser and
- two having only a destroyer. Set a tax rate (65% is recommended)
- for the planet to generate production points. By spending these
- points to build ships, armies, ground forces, and starbases, you can
- launch your campaign of galactic domination. As you colonize new
- planets, you will want to lower your tax rate (sometimes almost to
- zero) to facilitate faster growth of resources on your new planets.

- GAME TIME - THE ROUND:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Each round is equivalent to one year of game time. Enter your
- orders for the year using the program menus. During the preset
- maintenance time, the program will calculate the results of the
- moves of all players.

- WHAT YOU CAN DO IN A ROUND:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- 1. Planets: build units, commission fleets from built ships, or set
- production levels for the year.

- 2. Fleets: colonize raw (uninhabited) planets, merge or detach
- ships, fight enemy fleets, spy on opponents, or conquer inhabited
- planets.

- 3. Communications: set up alliances, non-aggression pacts,
- diplomatic negotiations or betrayals with other players.

- THE FORCES AT YOUR COMMAND:

- You control five major types of objects: Planets, Ships, Starbases,
- Armies, and Ground Batteries.

- There are 6 types of starships -- 3 combat types (Battleships,
- Cruisers, and Destroyers) and 3 specialized types (Scouts for
- spying, troop transports for carrying planet conquering armies, and
- ETACs which will colonize unoccupied (raw) planets).

- Starbases enhance planetary defense and growth. Armies protect or
- conquer planets. Ground Batteries are planet-based cannons.

- STRATEGY HINTS FOR BEGINNING THE GAME:
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- PRINT OUT A STARMAP. Have the game display the entire galaxy map on
- the screen. You can use your telecommunications program to capture
- the display and then print the map. This greatly aids your ability
- to plan your actions and plot the actions of the other players.

- ORDER ETAC SHIPS TO COLONIZE NEARBY PLANETS. Increasing the number of
- planets you own increases your ability to build fleets to attack
- opponents.

- SET THE TAX RATE FOR YOUR EMPIRE. You build equipment by spending the
- production points you get through taxes on your planets. It is not
- recommended that you set it higher than 65% or some of your planets'
- production may suffer.

- BUILD PLANETARY DEFENSES (Ground Batteries, combat ships, and armies).
- A good number of production points should be spent on defending your
- planets against attack by other players.

- BUILD COMBAT FLEETS (combat ships and troop transports). These will be
- needed for conquering opponents' planets or beating their fleets.
-
- BUILD STARBASES. Starbases enhance your planets' the ability to build
- units, defend themselves and increase growth rates.

- OBTAIN EMPIRE SUMMARIES FROM THE GENERAL COMMAND MENU. This provides a
- thorough report of the status of your planets and fleets. That way,
- you can get the complete summary in a few minutes and then log off
- to plan your moves.

- CONQUER / ATTACK ENEMIES' PLANETS. This will weaken their resources
- and increase your capacities. There are three methods of assaulting
- a planet:

- 1. The BLITZ: use troop transports to drop armies onto the enemy
- planet. If your armies defeat the enemy armies, you win the
- planet.

- 2. The INVADE: use Combat ships to fight the planet's ground
- batteries and armies. Then your troop transports deliver armies
- onto the planet and if they beat remaining enemy armies, the
- planet is yours.

- 3. The BOMBARD: use Combat ships to pummel an enemy planet so it is
- useless to your opponent.
